Bicycle Fact Sheet

Trips

About half of all trips are 3 miles or less, a reasonable walking or biking distance.

About a quarter of all trips are made by bike in the City of Davis.

About 2 per cent of all trips, the same as transit, are made by bike in Sacramento County. (SACOG)

In some cities in the Netherlands and Germany, 40 per cent of all trips are made by bike.

80 per cent of trips are not to work—they are errands, visits, and recreational activities

Pollution

Bicycles are the only true zero emissions vehicle. Even electric vehicles are "emissions elsewhere" vehicles.

The automobile is the No. 1 cause of air pollution. In Sacramento, 70 percent of the pollution is generated by tailpipe emissions. (Caltrans)

Air in Sacramento County violated state health standards an average of one out of every two days in the summer because of high ozone levels. (Caltrans)

An estimated 1.8 billion pounds of tire dust is released into the air annually in the U.S. 60 per cent of tire fragments (tire dust) are so small they can enter the deep portions of the human lung and cause reactions ranging from runny nose and tearful eyes to hives, bronchial asthma, and even life threatening anaphylactic shock. (Paving Moratorium Update)

If bike trips were to replace only an additional 3 percent of car and light truck trips by 2010, there would be a 1.2 ton/day reduction in smog forming gases (ROG and NOx) and a .4 ton/day reduction in particulates (PM10) in the Sacramento region.

The California Air Resources Board has shown that bicycle projects are a cost-effective means of reducing motor vehicle emissions, with reductions of smog-forming gases and particulates costing $5-$10 per pound.

Congestion

Traffic congestion is estimated to cost California 400,000 hours of wasted time and productivity every day. (Caltrans)

Health

The U.S. Surgeon General cites lacks of exercise as a health risk.

The California Department of Health Services actively promotes cycling and walking.

More U.S. children are obese than ever before.

Economics

There are about 40 bike shops in the Sacramento area.

Bicycling imposes virtually no wear and tear on the roads.

Automobiles cost about 44 cents a mile to operate, bicycles about 1 or 2 cents a mile.

A single parking space in an underground garage can cost $20,000.

Automobile use is subsidized by a variety of mechanisms—"free" parking, gasoline pricing that does not reflect the environmental, health, and

Land use

Automobile related land uses (streets, parking) consume 1/3 or more of urban space.

About 12 bicycles can be parked in the space required for one automobile.

Ownership

There are over 100 million bicycles in the U.S.

Safety

About 40,000 American are killed in automobile crashes each year. This is the equivalent about 2-1/2 Boeing 747 crashes a week.

About 800 U.S. cyclists die in crashes each year.

Attitudes

In a survey of U.S. voters, 4 out 5 agreed that creating safer communities for children was a key justification for spending transportation monies for sidewalk, bicycle trails and bicycle lanes.
