Sacramento Bike Commute Month 2007 Show-off/Kick-off Ride May 1

The ride is over.  Hope you we're able to join us!  Check out photos on www.bikecommutemonth.com.

Cyclists will start gathering at 11:30 a.m. for the ride and media event at St. Rose of Lima Park, 7th and K Streets.  The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) will be holding a press conference at 11:30 featuring Bike Commute Month Honorary Co-chairs Steve Cohn, Councilmember from Sacramento, and Christopher Cabaldon, Mayor of West Sacramento.

The Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA), Sacramento Bike Hikers and Sacramento Wheelmen are organizing the ride to kick-off Bike Commute Month and Million Mile May and to show off two new area bike trails. There will be two ride options, 6 miles and 17 miles. Many prominent Sacramento cyclists are receiving special invitations to participate. The rides are free and open to the public.

SABA and the Sacramento Transportation Management Association are inviting everyone, including the general public and over 100 prominent Sacramento cyclists (government leaders, elected officials and business executives) to ride, have some fun and promote cycling.

The rides are opportunities to explore the city on the new trails and see some unfamiliar, attractive and interesting sights.

The shorter ride will head north to the new Two Rivers Trail and loop through Old Sacramento and downtown. The Two Rivers Trail offers scenic views of the American River from a new perspective. For a map of the short ride see http://tinyurl.com/2p5xc8.

The long ride will split from the short ride at the south end of the Jibboom Street Bridge and head to the Ueda Parkway via the American River Parkway bike trail and city streets. The Ueda Parkway has a new continuous levee-top trail that parallels Steelhead Creek. The creek and its banks are home to ducks, heron and other wildlife. For a map of the long ride see http://tinyurl.com/ynw8mu.

City of Sacramento bicycle coordinator Ed Cox will act as docent. At scheduled stops, he will describe future plans for the Two Rivers Trail, Ueda Parkway Trail and plans for future bikeways. Both rides will end at Bishop Gallegos Square, 11 th and K Streets, where there will be some snacks for riders.

Estimated riding times are less than one hour for the short ride and less than two hours for the long ride.

Route sheets for the rides are below.

Million Mile Month

May again will be Million Mile Month.  Can Sacramento cyclists log a million miles during the month?  They made it almost halfway in 2005, covering less than 500,000 miles. In 2006, cyclists pedaled 627,000 miles.  If more cyclists register and ride this year, area cyclists can document travelling the equivalent of two round trips to the moon--all while getting fitter, cleaning the air and cutting traffic congestion.  That would be out of this world!  Every mile counts!
